Soil Mehlich-3-extractable elements as affected by the addition of biochars to a clay soil co-amended with or without a compost

Biochar has the potential to sequester carbon and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, it may also contribute nutrients for plant growth in temperate climates. Nutrient availability biochar-amended soil was assessed a 338 d incubation study. The clay prepared with 4% w/w (dry basis) compost or without compost, then amended wood-based biochar made at different pyrolysis temperatures [maple bark (Acer saccharum) 400 (M400), 550 (M550), 700 °C (M700)] on dry-rate basis of 5% (w/w). After moistening mixture 44% volumetric water content (equivalent 70% water-filled pore space), mixtures were incubated dark 22 °C. Soil sampled days 9, 16, 23, 44, 86, 23 170, incubation. amendment increased Mehlich-3 phosphorus, potassium (K), magnesium, copper concentrations, reduced aluminum iron concentrations each sampling date, M400 had most significant effect Mehlich-3-extractable nutrient concentrations. In addition, mixed more K than when applied alone, probably due greater activity K-solubilizing microorganisms. Overall, our study indicated co-application could improve fertility regions by increasing macronutrients micronutrients.
